Rafting on the Colorado River

On our Grand Canyon excursion we had the opportunity to take a 15 mile rafting trip down the Colorado River from the base of the Glen Canyon dam to Lee’s Ferry. Colorado River Discovery was the outfitter of choice, and we were more than pleased with the experience.

The Glen Canyon dam is just outside of Page, Arizona. It’s about 2 hours from the Grand Canyon South Rim. I booked the trip here and again was very happy with the experience.

A couple of things to note:

  1. The water is cold.
  2. The air is hot.
  3. The water is cold.

When we were moving along on the raft it was very nice, but the moment we stopped to explore the canyon and got more than a few feet away from the water it got hot really fast. The air temperature on the day we were there was in the high 90s. The water temp was in the high 40s… yes… 40s.

So at one of the stops there was a group of kids daring each other to jump in so Rebecca decided to give it a go. As cold as it was she was dry in just a few minutes and splashed around every chance she got from that point on.

Most of the pictures were taken with my Sony HX5v and while the conversion to “web” format does reduce the quality (as expected), the pictures came out great. Of course a few of these also came off of Rebecca’s cheapy Sony S650, and there are even a couple from my iPhone. Bottom line… when you take a trip like this take along a good camera.
